This week’s Grave of the Week is police chief, and tax collector, Alva Joyner. Mr. Joyner died at his home at 250 N. C Street after two heart attacks.
Born January 6, 1887, near Exeter, he was 54 when he died. He attended school in Exeter and worked as a farmer and miner.
In 1922, he began work as a night officer for Exeter PD. In 1925, he became police chief and tax collector (a combined job at the time). He was also a member of the Kiwanis club, director of the Red Cross and a member of the Tulare County Peace Officers’ Association.
At his funeral, the CHP provided an escort and members of the Peace Officers’ Association served as guards of honor. Pallbearers included Joe Borgman, Jack Griggs, Jack Dungan and many others.
