This week’s Grave of the Week is Birtie and Carel Stalker. The Stalkers came from Missouri and lived in Exeter in the 1930s and had four children. They left the area for a while and ran a chicken ranch in Covina before returning to Exeter in the 50s. Birtie worked in the packing houses, as many residents did at the time. Carel was employed by the T.Q. Pogue Ranch in Exeter. They were very active in the Church of God on H and Chestnut. The Stalkers were married 66 years and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Church of God. Birtie had a quilt making class at the church as well.

The Stalker’s granddaughter, Carlene, remembers spending time with her grandparents at their home on H Street. They were older and retired when Carlene was born but she has fond memories of her time with them and loved them dearly. She has one of Birtie’s friendship quilts that is dated 1937.
Thank you, Carlene Travis, for reaching out and sharing your happy memories of your family with us. People like the Stalkers were integral members of the Exeter community and their working and living in this area helped make this area what it is today—a place full of rich history and loving families.
