Floyd Brown and Roberta Gunn

This week’s Graves of the Week come from Hamilton Cemetery, which just had its road and lot scraped courtesy of one of our wonderful neighbors who took his time and equipment out there to clean a little. Floyd Brown and Roberta Gunn married in 1934 and remained together until her death in 2004.

Roberta was born in 1927, in Inglewood. After getting married, the couple moved to Illinois until settling in Exeter in 1951. She managed the district office of Senator Howard Way for 14 years. She worked with Brownies, Girl Scouts, American Field Service programs, and started the day care nursery at the Exeter Methodist Church.

Roberta also worked with the Exeter Hospital District and Ambulance District. She was an officer in the League of Women Voters and secretary for the county Grand Jury. Later, she and her daughter started By the Water Tower Antiques. For her numerous contributions to the town, she was named Exeter Woman of the Year in 1981.

Floyd was born in Illinois in 1923. He served in the Army Air Force and was a pilot of a B-24 Liberator. After serving, he and Roberta stayed in Illinois while he obtained his degree is civil engineering.

In Exeter, he was the first manager of the Exeter Irrigation District. It was a position he held for 37 years. Floyd enjoyed a variety of hobbies and sharing his knowledge of each. He was called a man of few words but those lucky enough to hear those words were thankful for the chance to know this great man. Floyd was Exeter Man of the Year in 1975.
