As a new way to promote and educate about the wonderful people who have shaped our community, every week a “Grave of the Week,” will be presented that will highlight a historically significant, or just an interesting, individual who graced us with their lives and should be remembered. This week, in honor of Peace Officer Memorial week, Officer Thomas Schroth is highlighted. Exeter Police Officer Schroth was killed in the line of duty on October 22, 1975, while responding to a domestic violence call. He attempted to contact the victim at the hospital and was ambushed by the perpetrator. Officer Schroth was survived by his wife and daughter, who was 8 months old at the time of his death. Schroth Park in Exeter is named for Officer Schroth. Officer Schroth is thanked dearly for his service and his ultimate sacrifice as all officers, both living and deceased, are thanked. Well wishes to Officer Schroth’s daughter and she should be assured her that her father is not forgotten by the community he served.
Officer Schroth’s grave is in good shape for 49 years old. The Exeter Cemetery District is working hard to maintain the quality of all three cemeteries but help from the public is always welcome and appreciated. Anything you may be able to give—shovels, weed spray, equipment, or even your time for yard maintenance is always greatly appreciated. It would be wonderful to have flags placed this week at any officer’s grave; that could become a great tradition and way to show our gratitude. Please help keep our cemeteries beacons of respect and honor.
If you know of anyone who should be featured for their contribution to the community, please message. The goal of this page is to support, honor, and keep memories alive in the Exeter Cemetery District.
