Robert Mixter

On November 7, 2025

This week’s Grave of the Week is Robert Mixter. Mr. Mixter passed away in 2009, at 87 years old. He left behind a family and community who loved him dearly.

At the corner of Pine and E is Mixter Park, named for the Mixter family and the drugstore that originally occupied a building ½ block from the park. Frank Mixter, Robert’s grandfather, bought the building in 1909 and in the 1930’s, passed the pharmacy onto his sons, Norbert and Earl. Norbert ran the business in Exeter with his son Robert, and upon Norbert’s retirement in 1973, Robert and his wife, Eleanor, owned and operated the store together. Robert retired in 1985, and in 1991, the building was destroyed by fire.

Robert, or Bob as he was known, was an only child and after attending school in Exeter, went to Cal Berkeley and the UCSF School of Pharmacy. After graduating, he enlisted in the Army and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in Germany as part of the 970th Counterintelligence Corps and was part of the post-war reconstruction.

After his service, he returned home and married Eleanor in 1946. Together they had four children. While working as a pharmacist, Bob was on the Exeter Elementary District school board, a member of the Masonic Lodge, and the Lion’s Club treasurer. He was also a Deacon and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church.

In his spare time, he enjoyed family trips to the cabin in Mineral King. He loved fly-fishing and hiking. After his retirement, he and Eleanor visited the Holy Land, Europe and Alaska.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his children, grandchildren, and his first great-grandchild was born a week after his death.

Please share your happy memories of Bob and the Mixter family here. The Mixters are still in integral part of our community and their contribution to Exeter is innumerable.

Norbert Mixter will be featured in the upcoming “Echoes of Exeter Walk,” on September 13, 2025. Tickets are available for sale now.
