This week’s Grave of the Week is found in Hamilton Cemetery and is Eleanor Ann Groom. Eleanor was the daughter of a school principal and carried her family’s love of education with her into adulthood when she herself became a teacher after graduating from Indiana University. She began teaching in El Paso and moved with her family to Denver, Olympia and Northridge before finally coming to Fresno. After working for the IRS, she returned to her love of teaching. She continued to teach in Tulare until age 82. She was remembered as a “firm but fair teacher,” and helped countless students overcome their challenges and graduate high school.
Ellie, as she was known, was a proud Hoosier and enjoyed basketball. She was also active in the community. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, AAUW and the Blue Chippers investment club. Bridge was a favorite pastime of hers too.
Ellie battled breast cancer on three occasions. She helped champion the cause of women’s health by participating in clinical trials for chemotherapy that sought to improve cancer treatment for women. Unfortunately, as it often does, cancer finally won, and she succumbed to the disease on November 11, 2017.
Eleanor was survived by her siblings, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hopefully this post finds her family well and assures them that the community also remembers their mother and grandmother.
Please share your kind words and fond memories of Eleanor in the comments.
