This week’s Grave of the Week is a personal one. Bertha Kirkendoll was born in 1912 in Shirley, Arkansas, and passed in 1999. She was my grandmother, Delcia Williams’, sister. I was born much later than my cousins and did not spend a lot of time with Aunt Bertha. I never knew my Uncle Arthur, who is buried next to her. I have memories of visiting Aunt Bertha at her apartment in Exeter and I remember attending her funeral with my mother.
Aunt Bertha was a homemaker and, according to my aunts, made a fantastic chocolate cake. She was a wonderful cook apparently. Our family came here from Arkansas to pick fruit.
I chose to feature Aunt Bertha this week because, even though I don’t have a lot of memories of her, she is family. While my family is always with me, at Christmas time I think a lot more about those who are no longer physically present. I miss my mom and my grandma and my other family that are no longer here in person.
I know everyone is missing someone this Christmas. Please feel free to share your memories of your loved ones this week and we can rejoice together in remembering everyone who is, and was, a part of our fantastic little community.
Message if you know anyone who should be featured on Grave of the Week. Please include any information about the person’s life and where the grave is located.
